The European Economic Area includes the 27 member states of the EU plus Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. An agreement from 1 Jan. 1994  between the European Community (later the EU) and EFTA (European Free Trade Association) allows Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway to participate in the EU's single market without full EU membership.
