Date of birth: 6 October 1960Leterme succeeded Herman Van Rompuy as Prime Minister after Van Rompuy was elected President of the European Council. Leterme was also Prime Minister from March 2008-Dec. 2008, but resigned over controversy surrounding the sale of Belgian bank Fortis. Leterme left a civil servant position at the EU and entered national politics in 1997 when he was appointed to the Belgian Parliament. In 2004 he became Minister-President of the Flemish government and in 2007 became Belgium’s Vice-Prime Minister.
