The son of Estonian refugees, Ilves grew up in the United States. He worked as a journalist for Radio Free Europe in the 1980s and became active in Estonian politics shortly before independence in 1991. Before becoming President, he served as Estonia’s Ambassador to the United States, Canada and Mexico, Minister of Foreign Affairs and as an MEP in the European Parliament.
