Halonen was elected Finland’s first female President in 2000 and was re-elected in 2006. In the 1970s she was a lawyer for the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions. She served as a Member of Parliament from 1979-2000 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1995-2000.
