Fico is a lawyer who formerly represented Slovakia at its legal counsel at the European Court of Human Rights. He was a member of the Communist Party before the Velvet Revolution ended the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia. Since 1999, he has been chairman of the leftist party SMER.
