Kaczyński had a doctorate in labour law. He was imprisoned from Dec. 1981-Oct. 1982 for involvement in the Solidarity movement. He later served in parliament and held several government positions, including Security Minister, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. He defeated Donald Tusk, in the presidential election. His twin bother, Jaroslaw Kaczyński, is a former Prime Minister. Kaczyński was killed in a plane wreck on 10 April 2010, along with his wife and other high ranking Polish officials.
