Fischer an economist and head of the Czech Statistical Office, was appointed interim Prime Minister in 2009 to replace Mirek Topolanek. Topolanek’s centre-right coalition cabinet was toppled in March 2009, midway through the Czech EU presidency. New elections are scheduled for June 2010. Fischer plans to resume his function as President of the Czech Statistical Office upon termination of his Prime Minister office.
