Köhler was re-elected President in May 2009 by just one vote. After serving as a top economic adviser to then Chancellor Helmut Kohl during the reunification of Germany, he became president of the German Savings Bank Association and later president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In May 2000, he was named managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
