Abela is a lawyer and worked as a legal consultant for the General Workers Union for 25 years. He also served as president of the Malta Football Association for ten years. In 1992 Abela was elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in charge of Party Affairs and in 1996 was appointed a legal consultant to the Prime Minister. Abela was was elected President of the Republic of Malta on the 4th April 2009 following a Parliamentary resolution which unanimously approved his nomination as the eighth President of Malta.
