Died: 10 December 1991Educated as a journalist, Malfatti was an important member of Democrazia Cristiana (the Christian Democratic Party) in which he became chief of the political bureau. At the national level, Malfatti served successively as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Finance, Instruction, Industry, Trade, and Mail and Telecommunications. In the 1980s he was chief of the Italian delegation in the European Parliament.
The Malfatti Commission’s mandate was marked by the relaunching of the European integration process: the adoption of a financial framework for the EC and the completion of the Common Market; the development of political and monetary cooperation; and the opening of talks with candidate countries (United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark and Norway).
