Dimitris Christofias earned a doctorate in history in Moscow, Russia.  He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1991 and was elected president of the House of Representatives in 2001 and again in 2006.  From 1988-2009 he served as the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL.
