De Gasperi was the founder of the Italian Christian Democratic Party and Italy’s Prime Minister from 1945-1953.  His leadership was instrumental in Italy’s partnership in NATO and the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). He President of the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1954, the precursor to the European Parliament.
