Cowen was first elected to the Dail lower house of parliament in 1984 at the age of 24. He has held a number of posts in the Cabinet, including Minister of Labour and Minster of Finance. As Foreign Minister from 2000-2004 he played an important role in the Northern Ireland peace process.
