Borisov is a former mayor of Sofia (2005-2009). He served as Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior from 2001-2005. In 2006, he founded GERB. A black belt in karate, Borisov has also served as a coach for the national karate team. In 1990 he started a private security company.
