Merkel is Germany’s first female Chancellor and the first from the formerly communist East. She was a minister for women and youth in Helmut Kohl’s cabinet and has been a member of the Bundestag since 1990. Since 2000, she has been the Chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union.  She also has a doctorate in physics.
