- Ombudsman
The European Ombudsman is one of the more recent institutions of the European Union, with the first Ombudsman taking office in 1995. The European Parliament elects the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman’s task is it to investigate maladministration of the European institutions, for example abuse of power or discrimination cases. He will subsequently inform the institution in question of the issue and ask it to solve the problem or adapt its actions accordingly. In case of non-compliance or no solution, the Ombudsman can issue a special report to the European Parliament. The European Ombudsman is in Strasbourg. He usually conducts investigations on the basis of complaints, but he can also initiate an investigation by himself.
