- European Central Bank (ECB)
Based in Frankfurt, Germany, the ECB is the central bank for the single currency, the euro. It is its main task to maintain the euro’s purchasing power, or in other words, to prevent its inflation and uphold price stability. Not all EU member states are part of the “eurozone”: Currently 17 member states have fulfilled the economic criteria to adopt the common currency.
The European Central Bank is also responsible for establishing the monetary policies within the euro area, to conduct foreign exchange operations, to ensure a smooth operation of the different payment systems as well as portfolio management, hence the management of the member states’ official foreign reserves.
