- European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
The ESEC is a consultative body of the European Union. It also serves as a platform for civil society organisations from the member states. Furthermore, it functions as a mediator ensuring that the policies are better integrated in the actual conditions in that field of policy of each member states. It is also meant to promote active participation of the citizens and engages in the communication with the civil society. The Committee comprises 344 members that are selected by their national governments and appointed by the Council for a renewable five year term.
The ESEC is divided in six different groups:
- Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT)
- Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO)
- Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC)
- External Relations (REX)
- The Single Market, Production and Consumption (INT)
- Transport, Energy, Infrastructure and the Information Society (TEN)
